We depend on agriculture or cultivation. We produce rice, wheat, vegetables and many other foods or food grains in our lands. But there are some conditions for growing of food. The conditions are timely rain as per requirements, right use of different pesticides and insecticides as per need and many others. When there is no rain, there is drought. When there is too much rain, there is flood. In both cases the crop fails and the result is famine. There are some other causes of famine as well. Famine is also caused when a large quantity of land-produce is destroyed due to some kind of insects called locusts or if large quantity of land-produce is sent out for money. It causes shortage of food in the country and most people have to face famine. The war is also a serious cause of famine.
Famine frequently causes in place like India. However, India has the best soil for agriculture. Siberia is one of the countries that suffer from famine due to the poverty of the country and people living there. There are many other places where people suffer from famine. In some part of Nepal like Doti, Rautahat, etc. suffer from famine due to flood or drought.
When famine breaks out, the food materials grow very dear and the poor man is the first victim of hunger and starvation who cannot purchase the dear food. But when there is serious famine no rich man can make there life or continue in spite of having wealth and money. And this time becomes too critical, when all human being grow pitiable and a single piece of bread becomes a common object of temptation to all the people. Sometimes, the famine-sufferers keep their live eating insects, leaves, barks of trees even. The most horrible scene of famine was famine of Bengal occurred in 1943 where many decent families were compelled to sell their young ones for sake of food. Even famine of Serbia is one of the examples of horrible scene of famine.
Famine cannot be stopped but, some precautions against famine can be taken. Scientific method of cultivation is one of the best precautions to have better cultivation. Provision of wells and canals, preparation of cheap manure etc. are some other methods that can be used as precaution against famine. Another step to control famine is to connect different parts of country by a network of railways, waterways or airways to supply goods from one place to another in critical times.
The government may also advance loans to the farmers. And some missionaries or missions should be made for the help of people suffering from famine as relief measures.
