Superstition: Black Cats Are Bad Luck

Friday, July 27, 2007

Millions of people all over the world have this superstition that seeing a black cat is inauspicious. In our country too they have this belief that if a black cat crosses your path, we take it as a bad omen. I just read about something about the black cat in one of my old magazines and found out some interesting fact which takes us back to thousands of years. Cats particularly black cats have been treated as inauspicious from those days. But personally, I don’t believe in this superstition. I might find it awkward as I was brought up in the same community with people believing about lots of superstitious things.

The ancients Egyptians worshipped the cat. They had a goddess called “Pasht” whose had resembled that of a cat. They believe that this goddess had nine lives. Whenever a black cat died in Egypt, its dead body was preserved as a mummy. Remains of thousands of black cats have been recovered from a cemetery of Egypt. Killing a cat was treated as an offence, punishable with death sentence. Thus people had a great fear of a black cat.

During the middle ages, witches and witch doctors always used the skull of a black cat to prepare mysterious medicines. As a result people started thinking that the black cat was bad. Thus people have been suffering from this superstition for many centuries. This is only an example of superstition we have in our world. Mostly in the country I live, Nepal, there are lots of superstitions which have really been a problem from thousands of years. It even proves fatal to some people when they are accused of harming other people with their witch powers. No living thing should ever be treated as inauspicious either human or a black cat for that matter, as there is nothing as inauspicious except the things our mind that leads us think it is; that is nothing but pure superstition.

$100 Laptop In Production

I had heard about this news that we will soon be getting laptops in the developing countries where we can buy it for $100. At first I thought there must be catch in it, as I have experienced that nothing is free in this world and nothing is cheaper too. Everybody has profit in their mind and every every business is set to earn profit. Well I might be wrong this time.

While surfing through google I found out the news published in the official bbc news site the head, '$100 laptop' production begins. Yeah, it really was true. I further read that it has been five years sine the concept was first proposed and now the company is going into mass production. The organization was behind schedule as they had 3m laptops to produce but now since the hardware suppliers have given the green light to ramp-up production of all of the components needed to build millions of the low-cost machines, the organization is working right on time. It is estimated that the first machines should be in the market and in the hands of children in developing countries by October 2007. The organization has not revealed about the countries which have bought the first machines.

I am sure our country will too have something in this area as we too are developing countries and not only children but I say the adults too need this type of computer in hands. With all the problems with load-shedding and other problems this laptop will surely serve as the backup for the webmasters working in our area. I am just dying to see it in our market!

Women and Economic Development - II

How can exploited workers get pay raises or increased benefits? What tactics might they use? What role does gender play in salary negotiations?

Well one of the most affective ways is by joining a labor organization that works for workers rights, in other words an organized protesting or negation of some form that the worker can benefit a little more in both benefits and salary. Nevertheless the likeliness of this organized protesting or form of negation is not likely to succeed because the business benefits from paying low wages, which means more earnings for them and the government in the country, will not put much legislation on these companies because they too benefit by having major companies and other investors in their country.

Considering that many of the workers are mainly women, most women will not complain about work habits, nor working hours (including wages) and that includes protesting against the company because, the company can find others to replace them with since it’s a monotonous job that does not require much education. Even the most effective tactic is organized protest and bring to the government ears, it will really hard to bring employers together just like in the history of the United States where such events like the Triangle Shirtwaist tragedy happen and catalyzed the creation of labor organizations with regulations.

Women and Economic Development - I

Women “often the most exploited of workers.” At the same time, it mentions that women often choose to work outside the home. How can you reconcile these two seemingly contradictory remarks? What drives women to work in exploitative jobs?

This statement is contradictory because even though “many women view these jobs however unsatisfactory as preferable to unpaid work at home, since wage earning provides them with a measure of economic stability and financial independence” these remarks are contradictory because in a way they are under paid when working in these jobs that exploiting them by not only by very low pay but also really bad work place conditions. For example in Luz case where she mentions the fact that they had to buy cleaning supplies to clean the companies restroom and bring toilet paper from home and not only that but also she mentions “we’re only supposed to go to the bathroom once a day”, apparently this a very good example of exploitation. In fact even our on country went through the same thing with women but in our case we had people like “Mother Jones” who not only protested against women’s working conditions but also men and children. Such groups like the Knights of Labor formed in 1905 pushed for better working conditions during Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency. Other events like the Triangle Shirt factory fire in 1911 pushed for national protesting against the working condition which brought attention to Roosevelt’s ears. Basically the women in the sewing factor had been locked inside the factor while there was a fire going on. Many died because these women had not been trained to evacuate the building many died next to their sewing machine and others jumped out the windows. These events changed the working atmosphere for the working women.

Nevertheless, these women’s independence of financial income comes with the price of being exploited in large companies which makes this statement contradictory because also “the jobs in these factories pay little and offer few opportunities for advancement. They are repetitive, monotonous, and frequently hazardous.” Which is almost the same thing as if they were at home working without pay and without anyway of advancing.

Hispanic Obesity: Homogenizing and Accuracy Influences

The huge obesity crisis has increased as the years go by in the United States obesity has “[raised] dramatically in recent years, from 15 percent during 1976-80 to 30.9 percent during 1999-2002” (Cawley 452). Many articles present statistical data about the increase of obesity among Hispanics. Such articles like John Cawley’s, The Impact of Obesity on Wages, basically states that a person’s BMI is not a genetic factor but “in turn be affected by wages and personal characteristics”(Cawley 452). Nevertheless, Mike Powers’ article says otherwise, he states in his article, Hispanic Growth, he points out other factors such as socioeconomic factors, acculturation, dietary and nutritional factors are contributors as well as the genetic factors that correlate with being “overweight and obesity are huge problems among Hispanics. Obviously diet plays a role, but there might also be a genetic susceptibility that makes Hispanics put on weight” (Powers). Nevertheless, Cawley completely avoids the factors of genetics while Powers’ addresses it as a possible factor to the increase of Hispanic obesity in the United States. Both authors point out great factors that contribute to Hispanic obesity, nonetheless, neither differentiate the Hispanic groups both authors “homogenizes” the Hispanic community. In this paper, using my articles I want to refute the idea that not just wages and obesity correlate but also genetic factors can come into play in the high rise of Hispanic obesity in the United States. The other argument that is addressed in Lang’s article she points out whether “homogenizing” the Hispanic ethnicity in statistical data affect the accuracy or even the credibility of statistical data considering that not all Spanish-speaking people adapt the same to acculturation of American lifestyle like for example Puerto Ricans.

Genetics versus the Impact of Wages and Obesity:

In John Cawley’s article, The Impact of Obesity on Wages, he presents the idea that obesity is caused by lower wages, thus linking the impact of obesity with wages or the impact that lower wages has on obesity in America. He basically states “that low wages cause obesity. This would be true if poorer people consumed cheaper more fattening food” (Cawley 452). Therefore, relates both obesity and wages as variables that correlate to the outcome of “how obesity correlates with labor market outcomes, and why is important in part because the prevalence of obesity in the United States had risen dramatically in recent years, from 15 percent during 1976-80 to 30.9 percent during 1999-2002” (Cawley 452). Nevertheless he says that a person’s BMI which is how individuals are classified as overweight or obese, has nothing to do with genetic factor but “in turn be affected by wages and personal characteristics’” (Cawley 452). Cawley has obviously disregarded the socioeconomic aspects, the health care issue, the exposure to acculturation specifically from Hispanic immigrants assimilating to American life and many other factors that many of the articles I researched have touched upon.

On the other h and Mike Powers’s article, Hispanic Growth, he integrates many of the other factors including the genetic factor which is one of the factors that many of the other articles avoid to discuss. Powers’ addresses the key idea that not only Nurture but Nature come to play with the obesity factor in the Hispanic community. He addresses the fact that diabetes which is also linked to obesity could be because “increased levels of obesity are associated with elevated risk of degenerative cardiovascular and metabolic disease, hypertension, stroke, and adult-onset diabetes […] the fact that diabetes is higher among Mexican Americans makes one wonder whether if there is a connection with the Spanish-Indian heritage that so many Mexican Americans come from” (Powers). Genetics do have an important role in obesity but it is not entirely a big factor in obesity, nevertheless, Powers’ does addresses the genetic predisposition factor which Cawley refutes as a contributor to the issue of obesity. Instead he says that it is the impact of wages, specifically lower ones that are linked to obesity in the United States, he then links this idea to the fact that the access of cheaper fattening foods nevertheless they don’t consider the fact that many of the statistical data homogenizes the data therefore the accuracy of the data is in question.

Homogenizing Hispanic ethnic groups and the accuracy in statistical data on obesity:

In Susan S. Lang’s article she points out a very interesting aspect when it comes to statistical data about ethnic groups. Lang specifies the issue of Hispanic obesity in the United States, she addresses the fact that most of the statistical data on Hispanics dietary and nutritional facts and how acculturation is affected by the different cultures. She says that many homogenize Hispanic culture and ethnicity, meaning that all of the Hispanic have been grouped together not considering that “U.S. Hispanics are a diverse collection of cultural groups each having its own traditional diet with strengths and weaknesses that may be compounded when they move to the U.S. and are influenced by American food patterns”(Lang). Well obviously this would affect statistical data because even though this particular ethnic group speaks the same language it doesn’t precisely mean that they have the same dietary or nutritional beliefs or thoughts about the way they eat, of course this creates bias and possibly incorrect sampling of the ethnic population which of course puts into question the accuracy of the statistical data. For example in Liz Castells and Becky Ebenkamp’s article called Living La Vida Large, both of the authors address the fact that “Recent U.S. immigrants tend to be healthier, thinner and blessed with longer life expectancies than long-term Hispanic residents, upon whom junk food acculturation has taken its toll. Latinos are even experiencing a higher prevalence of obesity than the increasingly jumbo-fled general population” (Castells& Ebenkamp 18). This shows the differences in culture and of course the concept of acculturation in different ethnic groups such as Hispanic Immigrants who gradually adapt to American lifestyle versus to their counterparts that are inborn Hispanic Americans. This exactly the point that Lang is trying to point out, that not all Hispanics are the same in the sense of dietary and nutritional intake.

Conclusion:

Many of the scholarly articles and journals do not go into enough depth specifically seeing the difference among these groups, which then shows that maybe the statistics aren’t really accurate therefore they might not even be detailed enough to come to a consensus. Nevertheless, it’s hard to get accurate data from real life situations into an experiment because there are many factors that can influence differently in the “real life setting” versus a controlled experiment where all variables are identified. For example in this case I could say that genetic factors are the independent variable but the factor of wages is the dependent variable but both variables links to obesity. Cawley and Powers present interesting ideas of what the contributing factors might be that have increased the level of obesity among the Hispanic community, especially since this minority is one of the fastest growing groups in the United States but it’s also one of the fastest that is being affected by this issue of obesity in the United States.

Monday, July 23, 2007

Once again the season of getting your loved one is on. It's July and lots of couples get married at this time of the year. What would the best gift for them? How would you propose your loved ones? The most reasonable and often answer would be with a Diamond Ring. As we all know rings are known to symbolize eternity and that diamond have always been a symbol of love and beauty, I find no other way to show your love and affection than by just putting the two of them together having a strong symbol of eternal love, strength, and beauty.

The diamond rings are given as gifts to loved ones, but most of the time diamond rings are given as engagement rings and even anniversary rings after many years of marriage as well. I haven't given any diamond rings to anyone as of yet but if time comes and with the money in my hand, I would sure love to propose whomever becomes my loved one with a descent diamond ring. Well if you also have the same thought, you'd be asking where can I find one descent ring? Well I would suggest DiamondSafe.com. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - 7th And Final Book By J.K. Rowling

Great news for the readers of Harry Potter. This week on July 21, 2007, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released. It is the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series of novels by J. K. Rowling. It was globally released in 93 countries at a minute past midnight (00:01), local time, on 2007-07-20 23:01 UTC. The book has reached at the top spot on both the Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble bestseller lists just a few hours after the date of publication was announced on 1 February 2007. The book was first released in the United States and Canada and then later it was was released for sale within each separate time zone at 00:01 local time, a few hours after other English-speaking countries.

I saw some details in wikipedia and found the following interesting facts about the book itself:
The book chronicles the events directly following Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, leading to the long awaited final struggle between Harry Potter and his allies, and the ever-more-powerful and influential Voldemort and his allies, the Death Eaters.

Retailers such as Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and Borders reported that more orders had been placed for this book than for any other in history, and American publisher Scholastic announced an unprecedented initial print run of 12 million copies.

Borders reported that its 1,200 stores worldwide sold 1.2 million copies on the book's first day of sales. This is the highest single day sales of any title in Borders history. In comparison, the sixth book sold 850,000 copies on its first day.

I am sure lots of readers are dying to have the book and read the final version of the series. In the meantime, lots of the readers will be disappointed as the series is going to end from now onwards. But personally, I don't think the writer should stop writing such a great series. Well may be she will stop this series and thinking of creating a much more imaginative story than this one. It's all in her hands and mind now. The readers would surely love to have another book from her or may be another new series of Harry Potter. Well for the time being and till the next book of the writer, J.K. Rowling, this is the final version of Harry Potter.
