The best-known temple to the goddess kali the terrifying is located on the southern edge of the valley. To get there takes about 45 minutes by car passing on the way the narrow Chobar gorge through which flows the Bagmati River. The best day to visit Daxinkali is Saturday when crowds of Nepalese journey. Here to sacrifice chickens and goats to the blood-thirsty goddess. Tuesday is another, quieter, sacrificial day.
The temple is at bottom of the steep hill with a small stream flowing close by. After their rapid dispatch the animals are butchered in the stream and the carcasses will later be brought home for a feast. It is interesting that sacrifices are always made to goddesses and must always be made with young male animals.
